Amalgam is the oldest cheapest and very resitent filling material. Meanwhile, beside not looking good, an Amalgam Reconstruction is necessary, when other metals, i.e. Crowns, Prothetics etc. are present. This can cause Galvanic currents, which can lead to corrosion and destruction of the amalgam.
With an Amalgam Reconstruction the present filling is removed and replaced with either plastic, composition filling, gold or ceramic inlays. The replacement of Amalgam depends on, as well as the cosmetic aspect, age, position of the filling and wearage. The influence of mercury to the human body is discutable; however a reconstruction is an alternative, utilising materials without health risk.
